Before I ever knew what crunchy buns also known as Hot Cross Buns were, these type Nigerian buns were what I had in my head each time I heard the nursery rhyme Hot Cross Buns.

These yummy Crunchy Nigerian buns are crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfect for a hot cup of tea or coffee

Crunchy Nigerian Buns are deep fried snack. They are crunchy, crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. These deep fried buns are easy to make and not time consuming

This is a snack you can easily come up with quickly while visitors are around .You get to serve it to your visitors fresh and hot from the frying pan while yummy and hot

What is the difference between Crunchy Nigerian Buns and Nigerian Puff puff?

Nigerian buns and Nigerian puff puff are both popular Nigerian street foods, however they differ in texture and ingredients used.

Texture: Buns are sweet and crunchy on the outside, and soft inside. On the other hand, puff puff is soft on the inside and outside.

Ingredients: similar ingredients are used, but the major difference is in the rising agent. Yeast is used for puff puff while baking powder is used for buns.

Tips to make the best Crunchy Nigerian buns

The batter for buns should be thick and sticky and not watery.

The best pan to fry buns is a deep pan not a shallow pan.

The oil should be hot enough before adding the batter otherwise it will absorb excess oil and become greasy.

Do not overcrowd the oil with buns batter it can also cause the buns to absorb excess oil.

Use a perforated spoon to get the cooked buns out of the oil.

Line the sieve with paper towels to drain excess oil.

To Make This Soft and Crunchy Nigerian Buns Recipe

Crunchy Nigerian Buns

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 grated nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon powdered milk
  • 50ml melted margarine
  • 1 and 1/2 cup water
  • Cooking oil for frying

Procedure

  1. Sift the flour and baking powder into a clean dry bowl
  2. Add sugar, powdered milk,salt and grated nutmeg and combine
  3. Add melted margarine and combine
  4. Add water and combine till you get a sticky dough(This is what gives the crunchy outside of the buns)
  5. Heat up oil and gently add the buns batter, don’t over crowd
  6. Stir at close intervals
  7. It’s done when it’s golden brown
  8. Transfer to paper towel to drain excess oil
  9. Enjoy with tea,soft drink or anything that works well with you.
